I can’t think of a better time to talk skin protection than RIGHT NOW. For starters it’s skin cancer awareness month. Did you know that melanoma cancer is the most aggressive, deadliest form of cancer there is? And you can play a major part in protecting against melanoma by your own skin best practices. I can’t write this blog post and tell you how top awesome I’ve been at protecting my skin in the past. But I’m focused on it now, signs of aging are in full effect and both of my kids have eczema, thus very sensitive skin. We all know that sunblock is essential but what I didn’t realize is that not all clothing is created equal when it comes to skin protection. Remember when you were younger and would just throw on a tee shirt when you realized you were starting to look like a lobster?! I can remember many beach vacations when we would shield our sunburned skin with a t-shirt thinking it was a great barrier from the sun. Think again. Most clothing provides minimal protection, if any at all.
When I had the chance to chat with Summer Kramer, founder of SUMMERSKIN I realized that clothing is also critically important in the fight against melanoma. Summer, a melanoma cancer survivor, couldn’t find very many stylish sun protective options on the market; hence the impetus to start her own clothing line. She stresses the importance of choosing quality pieces during times in intense sun exposure. Clothing that meets the UPF requirements and a 50+ excellent sun protection rating. SUMMERSKIN clothing does just that. Her collection of everyday essentials (think denim dress, striped maxi, tops and bottoms) is comfortable, classic and safe from the sun’s harsh summer rays. Today’s striped maxi dress will be a go-to of mine this summer. I’m dressing it up a little today with a silk scarf but have also worn this maxi with flats and sneakers and as a bathing suit cover-up poolside. Sensible skin protection, one cute outfit at a time.
